It has been beaten into our heads: Wash your hands! Wash your hands before you eat, wash your hands after you use the bathroom, and now, with the rise of hand sanitizers, wash your hands always and everywhere.
Hand sanitizing has become a ritual. Splash splash, lather lather.
But isn't there a real benefit that goes beyond the product's actual efficacy? Isn't peace of mind worth something? Hand sanitizers sanitize anxiety. If that's the case, maybe the innovation in hand-washing is pure emotional validation and affirmation. The church does it, why couldn't Purell?
